THRESHOLDS
Whatever their degree of “realism,” all photographs embody a “romantic” relation to reality... . To take pictures is, simultaneously, to confer value and to render banal. [On Photography by Susan Sontag] In my new work, I am interested in getting to the threshold of the abstract that lies beneath the apparent surface of reality. I am also interested in seeing how these images might be interpreted either individually or as a contained narrative. THRESHOLDS embraces a more rigorous formal discipline than what I've been used to. The images were realized within a one-meter distance from subject to camera. Using this point-blank range and the perspective of a 50mm or 55mm lens, the project delves into the form/content relationship more than does my pervious "topographical" or documentary photography.
